Handwriting is usually difficult for children with Aspergers. They are often observed "drawing" their letters as opposed to "writing" their letters. The process of learning to write is a laborious task due to visual-spatial problems, hypotonia and poor fine motor control of their fingers.
Learning to use a keyboard early on is recommended for these students. The skills needed for typing are not as demanding or complex as those needed for handwriting.
Oftentimes, students with Aspergers use so much energy to write that they have little energy left to devote to the assignment at hand.
